Proportions were a big focus - What proportions will give us the most real-estate for accessories etc.?

I wanted to mix 2D and 3D assets. Most importantly, it would make the faces easier to customize. So I tried to blur the line between them by using some toon shaded materials. Here you can see them in the hat, face, and shoes.

In early sketches of the UI, I liked this idea of going to your locker to suit up.

I also liked the idea of using cards behind the avatar to show fire, or wings, or stinky lines. It would be easy to implement (no rigging) and add a lot of personality.

In the final version, shown here, my work focused on writing rules for proportions, acceptable value ranges, and how we render materials. We ended up working with 2D assets for technical reasons, but the design work was easy enough to carry over.

It was fun to see this all come together in product. It felt like student could start to make the space their own!

Dreambox Avatar Customizer

At Dreambox Learning, we developed an avatar customizer, and this is my this is my prototyping and ideation work I did for that customizer.

At the bottom you can see what we actually shipped as a team. I chose to highlight the concept work because that was more exclusively mine. I did work on the final version of the avatar customizer, helping to develop our pipeline for new assets and doing some of the work painting those assets.
